The AWS Outage: The Invisible Vulnerabilities of a Centralized Cloud

    11/05/2025 Trusted Cyber

We are all familiar with the concept of 'the cloud,' an invisible yet powerful force that has become the foundation of modern business. But what exactly is it, and why does its failure threaten a law firm's ability to function?

The cloud is a global, interconnected network of data centers predominantly owned and operated by Amazon Web Services, otherwise known as AWS. These centers house the physical servers, storage, and networking that power every digital tool your firm relies on. These types of outages affect industries far and wide, from streaming platforms and financial applications to gaming and Amazon's very own e-commerce site. In total, this outage resulted in a projected loss of $581 million, according to analytics released by CyberCube.

    A Timing-Dependent Bug

Let's dive into the day of the outage and the bugs that caused this multimillion-dollar error. On October 20, 2025, AWS experienced a significant, 15+ hour service disruption in its crucial US-EAST-1 region in Northern Virginia, causing a "domino effect" that stalled popular apps and digital tools globally. Overall, the outage severely impacted approximately 70,000 organizations, with over 2,000 being larger brands, including Venmo, AT&T, Robinhood, and others.

In short, this was caused by server miscommunication. Davi Ottenheimer, vice president of Inrupt, a data infrastructure company, states that "when the system couldn't correctly resolve which server to connect to, cascading failures took down services across the internet. Today's AWS outage is a classic availability problem, and we need to start seeing it more as data integrity failure."

    Some Good News?

The best news to come from this outage was that it was not caused by nefarious means. Even though losing internet access and payment services can cripple a company for a day, a larger threat, such as a hacker, could lead to more dire consequences across the board. The hope is that AWS can learn from its internal miscommunications and rebuild trust with its cloud customers in the near future.

How the Right IT can Translate the Chaos

Now, it's time to get proactive. When AWS reports an issue, your team needs to be in the loop so you know if or how your e-discovery platform and case management systems are impacted. With a trusted IT service partner, you can handle these complex situations together, knowing you have a professional team that can translate technical jargon into actionable steps and key insights for your team.

Even with AWS on the lookout for errors, the next outage is not a matter of if, but when. The only question that remains is whether your law firm will be ready. Learn more about TrustedCyber and how we can keep your data safe and secure in the event of another outage.
